Personal branding for wealth management

Half of money's most visible brands are the same wise expert.

We ran 196 of the most visible money brands through the same instrument we would point at you. Nearly half are the same character. Here is the map of the field, and the character sitting open for you.

Wealth management, decoded

196 brands, one character. Two thirds of the field, in two poses.

The crowd

Everyone is the Sage.

Read the field by character, not vocabulary, and it collapses. Nearly half of the most visible money brands play one part, the wise teacher, the expert who leads with what they know. Add the supportive companion and two characters own two thirds of the field. It is not just that everyone says the same words. Everyone is the same person, and the room has met that person forty times this week.

The shadow

Topic is a costume. Character is the person.

So you niche down, or talk about the meaning of money instead of the returns. Smart, and not enough. The advisors most famous for the deepest subject in the field still read as the same character, a wise teacher with a better syllabus. Change the subject all you like. A prospect chooses a person, not a curriculum.

The white space

The needs no one serves.

An empty lane is only an opening where a client is standing in it, wanting. Three characters qualify. Help me enjoy it, the Lover, and not one brand in 196 plays it, the profession is puritanical about money as pleasure. Help me stop being afraid, the Healer, the register the field flinches from. Get me through the change, the Transformer, for the client at a threshold, a divorce, a sale, a windfall, a loss, where the field is built for the ongoing relationship and ignores the episodic moment. The biggest unmet need of all, make it simple, is not a new character at all. It is the Sage the whole field already plays, just played sophisticated when the client wanted it plain. The openings are not poses to strike. They are the needs the field abandoned.

We counted it

Of 196 of the most visible money brands, 88 read as the same character, the wise teacher. Two-thirds are the Sage or the Companion.

That is the field. The question is where you sit in it.

Knowing the terrain is half of it. The other half is you. The same instrument that read the field reads you: who you are at your best, the gap between how you present and how your clients actually experience you, and the character this field leaves open for you specifically. Not a personality type. A measured read of your personal brand, and the character only you can take.

You know the field is crowded. This tells you which character you are playing, and which one could be yours.
