Personal branding for wineries

‘Let the wine speak’ is why nobody can hear you.

We read 200 of the world's most visible wineries on the same instrument we would point at you, 50 of them Canadian. Here is what the field looks like, why Canada is the narrowest of all, and the four open positions almost no one is sitting in.

The wine category, decoded

Everyone reaches for the same humble pose. Canada reaches for almost nothing else.

The crowd

Everyone reaches for the same humble pose. Canada reaches for almost nothing else.

The category has only two respectable poses: the humble Craftsman who lets the wine speak, and the storied Aristocrat whose name precedes the bottle. But the Aristocrat cannot be chosen, it has to be inherited. So everywhere the Craftsman leads, 44 in 100 in the Old World, 46 in the New. Then Canada, with no lineage to claim, does the one available pose almost to the exclusion of everything else. Eight in ten of its most visible wineries are the same humble craftsman. It is the narrowest wine identity we have measured anywhere.

The shadow

All craft, and no one at the table.

The craftsman pose has a signature line, and it is the most common sentence in the field: we let the wine speak for itself. On one winery it is a philosophy. Across two hundred it is a problem, because when every winery lets the wine speak, silence is the loudest room in the market. The brand is about the maker and the vine, never the guest, and a buyer at a shelf of humble craftsmen cannot hear terroir. Letting the wine speak is two hundred wineries all deciding to say nothing at exactly the same time.

The white space

Four doors, all open.

Canada did not run out of places to stand. It walked past them. Four poses sit empty with a drinker already waiting: the Friend, who makes it about the guest and the table; the Poet, who treats wine as romance and place; the Advocate, who takes a stand on the farming and the climate; and the Rebel, who breaks with the snobbery on purpose. Not one of the two hundred is an Advocate. None of the four lets you play the humble craftsman, which is the point.

We counted it

82% of Canada's most visible wineries strike the same humble craftsman pose. The cause, the rebel, the host and the poet all sit empty, each with a customer already waiting.

That is the field. The question is which one you are.

Knowing the terrain is half of it. The other half is you. The same instrument that read the field reads you: who you are at your best, the gap between the owner you present and the one your guests actually experience, and the position this field leaves open for you specifically. Not a personality test. A measured read of your brand, and the story only you can honestly tell.

You know the field is loud with personas. This tells you which one is really yours, and where you could stand instead.

The chair no owner will sit in

In wine, the brand is the owner's chosen pose. We decoded 200 of the world's most visible wineries, 50 of them Canadian, and found the one thing almost none of them sells: the person actually drinking the wine.

The lanes of winery positioning

Read 200 of the world's most visible wineries and every one falls into a handful of lanes. Nearly all sell the maker. Four lanes sell something else, and in Canada all four sit empty.

The words that make every winery invisible

A word only carries information when not everyone can say it. Here are the words that have gone invisible on winery About pages, and the ones still open.
