Personal branding for coaches
Every coach arrives with a framework and a book. That is exactly why the buyer cannot tell you apart.
We read 200 of the most visible coaches across North America on the same instrument we would point at you. It is the most concentrated field we have measured. Here is the map it produced, and the four chairs sitting open in it.
Coaching, decoded
A field of Gurus. On one instrument, the sameness is measurable.
The crowd
Everyone is the Guru.
Coaching sells a change the buyer cannot inspect before they pay for it, so the field falls back on the one proof it has, which is sounding wise. Read 200 of the most visible coaches across North America and half of them, one hundred and one, decode to the same character, the wise expert who leads with a framework, a model, a bestselling book. Add the supportive Healer and you are past six in ten. No field we have measured, not wealth, not wine, not real estate, concentrates this hard into a single pose. The buyer cannot tell one guru from the next, so they choose on price or on who a colleague already used.
The shadow
All head, plenty of heart, no edge.
The lazy read is all head and no heart. The data says otherwise, the second-biggest character is the supportive Healer, one coach in eight. The field is wise and it is warm. What it is not is challenging. The character who pushes, who holds you to the standard you keep dropping, who says the true thing the room will not, is almost gone, and it is the one thing an executive surrounded by yes-people cannot buy anywhere else. Even the coaches have become yes-people.
The white space
The four chairs no one takes.
Four chairs sit open, each with a client waiting and almost no coach in it. The Challenger pushes you instead of teaching you, the one thing a room full of yes-people cannot give. The Alchemist works the transformation, not the tactics, for the client who knows it is not a knowledge problem. The Rebel burns the playbook, for the client sick of gurus. And the Cornerman is a peer in your corner, not a guru above you. None of the four is the wise expert, which is the point.
We counted it
Two hundred of the most visible coaches across North America, read on one instrument. Half are the Guru, the wise expert with a framework. The Challenger, the coach who actually pushes you, holds sixteen.
That is the field. The question is where you sit in it.
Knowing the terrain is half of it. The other half is you. The same instrument that read the field reads you: who you are at your best, the gap between the coach you present and the one your clients actually experience, and the chair this field leaves open for you specifically. Not a personality type. A measured read of your personal brand, and the position only you can own.
You know the field sounds the same. This tells you where you are standing, and the chair that is yours.

Why every coach sounds the same
We decoded 200 of the most visible coaches across North America on one instrument. Half decode to the same character, the wise Guru with a framework. Here is why, and the move that breaks it.
Coaching · the language
The words that make every coach invisible
A word only carries information when not everyone can say it. Once every coach claims transformation and a proprietary framework, those words stop signalling anything.
Coaching · the move
How coaches actually stand out
The coaches who break the sameness do not offer a wiser framework. They name a narrower client, take a point of view, and sit in a chair no one else will. The move, measured.
