It is the tightest monoculture we have measured, tighter than coaching, tighter than wine. A profession that prizes originality above all else has produced the most identical field on earth. The celebrated visionary, the starchitect, is the runner-up and barely one in ten.
The shadow
‘Let the work speak’ is a vow of silence.
The master builder has a signature line and it is the most common sentence in the profession: I am not a talker, I let the buildings do the talking. On one architect it is modesty. Across two hundred it is a whole field agreeing to say nothing at once, and the client, who cannot read a plan or feel a room that does not exist yet, is left to choose on the two things still visible, the logo on the portfolio and the fee. The work cannot speak for you. It has not been built.
The white space
Four chairs, and no one is fighting for them.
Four chairs sit nearly empty, each with a client standing in it, and none of them is the silent master builder. The Reformer picks a fight, for the city, the public good, the housing that is not getting built, and not one of the two hundred is sitting there. The Humanist is loyal to the people who will live in the building, not the monograph. The Teacher makes the work legible, the one thing the field refuses to do. And the Rebel breaks with how buildings even get made. The emptiest chair is the one the moment is calling for.
We counted it
Of 200 of the most visible architects across North America, more than eight in ten strike the same master builder pose. The Reformer, the architect who picks a public fight, holds none of them.
